Homological finiteness conditions for groups, monoids and algebras

Recently several different homological finitenes conditions have been introduced for monoids. I will survey the interplay between these notions. It is, in fact, more natural (and more illuminating) to work in the wider context of associative algebras.

Finiteness Conditions for Strictness Analysis

We give upper bounds on the number of times the fixed point operator needs to be unfolded for strictness analysis of functional languages with lists. This extends previous work both in the syntax-directed nature of the approach and in the ability to deal with Wadler’s method for analysing lists. Limitations of the method are indicated.

Finiteness of Class Numbers for Algebraic Groups

Let G be an affine group scheme of finite type over a global field F . (We do not assume G to be reductive or smooth or connected.) Let AF denote the locally compact adele ring of F , S be a finite non-empty set of places of F that contains the archimedean places, and AF the factor ring of adeles with vanishing component along S; for FS = ∏ v∈S Fv, we have AF = FS ×AF . Recall that if X is a fi...

Improving Finiteness Properties for Metabelian Groups

We show that any finitely generated metabelian group can be embedded in a metabelian group of type F3. The proof builds upon work of G. Baumslag [4], who independently with V. R. Remeslennikov [10] proved that any finitely generated metabelian group can be embedded in a finitely presented one. We also rely essentially on the Sigma theory of R. Bieri and R. Strebel [7], who introduced this geome...

Finiteness Conditions for Light-Front Hamiltonians

Many advantages of the light-front (LF) formulation for bound state problems arise from the manifest boost invariance in the longitudinal direction [1{5]. The price for this advantage is that other symmetries, such as parity or rotational invariance (for rotations around a transverse axis) are no longer manifest [6,7]. From the technical point of view, the loss of manifest parity and full rotat...
